Infant Scientist

Today Jones was a participant in the NIRS 'Peek-a-boo' Study done at the Babylab at Birkbeck College, University London. It was soooo fun!!!

The study is testing babies' reactions to a combination of biological and non-biological stimuli to see if they react more to the biological stimuli - in this case, a woman on a screen playing peek-a-boo, making faces, and doing Incy Wincy Spider. The study uses a brain imaging technique called 'near infrared spectroscopy, NIRS, which measures the amount of oxygen in the blood when different areas of the brain are stimulated. So, Jones got to wear a special helmet and watch a variety of still and moving images on a screen while sitting on my lap! He loved it!!!

They said he was a really good subject because he watched the screen for the full seven minutes, didn't move that much, and smiled everytime the woman came on the screen. I couldn't see his face, but they were all pretty taken with him by the end of it. We're so proud of him.

Here he is - Jones the infant scientist!
