Ever. A strong word. A big statement. Ok, so for Jones this Halloween wasn't hard to beat as last year he wasn't up for much more than lying in our arms and blinking. But, for me and Angus we had many, many years of many happy Halloweens with which to compare, and, man, this year's won hands down.
Reasons why:
1) It was our son's first proper Halloween!!! Enough said.
2) Despite Britain's general reticence toward Halloween, it's increasing popularity - especially in our American saturated 'hood - meant we were able to take Jones trick-or-treating!
3) I was able to live a secret dream of making my baby a costume! Shucks.
4) Parental love and pride was at its absolute maximum!!!
On point four:
Pretty much from Jones's first day of life, Angus and I have talked about how, for Halloween, we should dress him up as Max from Maurice Sendak's classic children's book Where the Wild Things Are. This thought was inspired by his selection of snug-fitting, white sleep suits (affectionately known as his 'flight suits') which look very similar to Max's wolf suit in the book.
Example of 'flight suit':

So, this year I endeavoured to turn Jones into Max. The task seemed simple enough. Flight suit, tail, crown, whiskers. After a few hours of twisting coat hangers, hand-sewing fake fur (need a sewing machine!) and stapling gold lamay over toy stuffing, we had a costume. It worked!!! Well, other than the whiskers, it worked! (I just outright forgot the whiskers, dagnamit!)
I put Jones in it to try it on and about fell over with how cute he looked and had to wake Angus up from a (rare) nap.
We were both on the verge of happy tears throughout the day yesterday as we watched Jones walk around, play, sleep in his stroller, eat in his high chair, visit his friend at the laundrette where we dry our clothes and trick-or-treat while wearing his Max-'King of All Wild Things'-costume! Words can't express the pride and joy, really.
It was just, quite simply, the best Halloween ever...
