The reason why:
In the fantastic documentary The Corporation there is a segment in which a very toothy marketing executive (with the world's most annoying fake smile) explains "The Nag Study". The 'nag study' was a marketing exercize created to determine how open children are to advertising on TV and how they can influence their parents to buy them more stuff. They determined that if children - their study group was with 3 to 8 years-olds - saw brands during their morning cartoons and learning shows they would be more likely to 'nag' their parents for all the 'must have' toys, cereals, clothes, etc. every time they went to a store; thus exposing children, like the rest of us adults, up to 3,000 advertizements a day. The toothy marketing executive saw this as a great success...Angus and I saw it as utterly horrifying.
All this to say, we'll stick with the ad-less DVDs for now and try to keep Jones entranced with us rather than subliminal marketing...that should last until he's about, what, six months?!

It is disturbing how mesmerized they can get by tv. I don't know if you get Sesame Street there, but here it's commercial free on PBS. But get this - it's sponsored by McDonald's so there's a Ronald McDonald happy clown blurb before every single episode. Gross, huh?
